Acupuncture increases circulation, relaxes tight muscles and calms the nervous system for the health of your entire body

Acupuncture Services

What can we do with Acupuncture?

What can't we do with it?

We can treat trigger points for an IMS approach (shorter, more aggressive treatments) which releases knots in muscles, great for dancers and other athletes.
We can treat motor points, where nerves meet muscles to strengthen the neuromuscular connection.
We can treat along the spine which allows us to treat the source of the nerve for any area of pain or dysfunction on the body.
We can treat the sensory end of nerves on the limbs to modulate the nerve where pain can be felt further up.
We can treat the autonomic nervous system to relax the whole body allowing every system in the body to function better.

This clinic also uses other techniques that allow us to work more specifically on nerves, tendons, ligaments and joints to improve circulation and treat pain.

Acupuncture & IMS

Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of medical practice in the world, with thousands of years of clinical practice and evolution. In the hands of a trained, registered acupuncturist, this therapy has proven to be a very safe, simple, effective and sometimes affordable treatment.

At it's simplest, acupuncture involves the insertion of thin needles into the body for a desired effect - specifically the treatment of pain or disease.

What is IMS?

Intramuscular Stimulation is just acupuncture with a fancy name.

What does it do?

From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture is used for two things - to move and to clear. The goal of Chinese Medicine is not to force change (like surgery or drugs) but to help regulate the systems in the body. If a system is overactive it needs to be calmed and if underactive it needs to be stimulated.

Circulation Good health in Chinese medicine is based on the health of the circulatory system. A person can look healthy but get sick or die early because their inner health is poor. By maintaining and targeting increased circulation we can improve function and health.

Nervous system An acupuncture or other needling treatment that doesn't cause significant pain will help to relax the nervous system; moving the body from fight or flight response into rest and digest. Parasympathetic stimulation has been shown to decrease inflammation to help treat systemic pain, increase peripheral circulation and restore normal function of respiratory, cardiovascular, reproductive and urinary systems

Myofascial When we treat tight muscles and surrounding tissue, we can help relax the myofascial system which improves range of motion, flexibility and reduces pain.

What does it treat?

Almost everything.
Because acupuncture has widespread effects in the body, it has a very broad application. By regulating the nervous system and increasing circulation to specific parts of the body we can improve function and overall health.

Community Acupuncture

The same high level of care for a fraction of the cost. We have several reclining chairs in a room so you can get acupuncture treatment in a safe and comfortable environment. We understand that medical treatment can be very expensive and therefore difficult to afford and get results. No treatment will work if you don't follow the instructions, so this is the deal; we've made it affordable, you just need to use it until you feel better.

Why community acupuncture?

  • Great treatment for stress, anxiety or depression.
  • Are you low income? Treatment may be fully covered by MSP.
  • Access more frequent care for chronic issues.
  • Need fast results, like labour induction? Get more treatment without breaking the bank.
  • Nervous about treatment? Come with a friend.

Treatment is done wherever we can access - usually the head, arms and legs; but other areas are accesssible based on your comfort. Just remember that tight clothes can limit access to treatment area, so dress comfortably.

What does it treat?

Community acupuncture treats almost everything that standard acupuncture does. One thing to remember is that a few thousand years ago there were only 60 acupuncture points, all located below the elbows & knees so this is the original acupuncture.

On the other hand, if you have pain in your back caused by tight muscles then treating the back directly is often more successful, or at least quicker to get results.

Auricular Acupuncture

These are acupuncture or acupressure treatments done on the ears. Much like reflexology, the body's structural and functional aspects are mapped out on the ears in specific locations. This is a relatively recent form of acupuncture and lends much of its development to neurologists and physicians in Europe looking for new ways to treat patients.

Ear seeds & magnets are also very useful for people who hate needles.

What does it do?

The vagus nerve is one of the largest in the body and plays a key role in the regulation of many systems. This nerve has a pivotal role in our parasympathetic (rest & digest) nervous system which has been show in many studies to have profound effects on our health.

Parasympathetic stimulation, even just from meditation, can help reduce chronic pain and anxiety, increase circulation, improve reproductive, respiratory and digestive function and several other benefits.

Ear tacks continuously stimulate points while seeds and magnets provide on demand treatment when stimulated - which helps a lot when trying to manage cravings.

What does it treat?

Ear treatments are excellent for mental & emotional health. They play a key role in treating:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • PTSD
  • Smoking/Addiction

Cupping

Cupping, also called myofascial decompression or suction therapy, has been around for thousands of years and is a part of traditional folk medicines in nearly every part of the world: China, Australia, Europe, Africa and more.
Essentially a vacuum is made in a container which is placed on the skin which pulls up on the tissues beneath, much like a massage in reverse - pulling up instead of pressing in.

What's cupping used for?

Cupping loosens tight fascia below the skin and improves local circulation. It doesn't penetrate very deep but can affect superficial brances of deeper nerves to treat deeper tissue.

Ozone Therapy

Just here as an example

Lyftogt Perineural Injection Treatment (also known as Subcutaneous Prolotherapy, Neural Prolotherapy, Perineural Subcutaneous Injections and perineural injections) was developed Dr. John Lyftogt, a physician from New Zealand. Based on research from the early 20th century

These are superficial injections into the fascia between the skin & muscles where nerve might be trapped.

What does it do?

See that part to the right of the image of a healthy nerve? It looks nice & healthy, the sheath around it is able to move smoothly around the nerve as you move your body. Then there's that great big lump right in the middle, the nerve is inflamed and stuck because the sheath around it isn't moving the rest of the nerve to the left is stretched and very sensitive to motion.

What does it treat?

Perineural injections treat nerve entrapments; if there's a nerve entrapped in tissues or irritated where it passes over bones, this treatment can loosen the area, release the nerve and stop the pain.

Perineural treatment is specifically effective at treating:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Complex regional pain syndrome
  • Neuropathy
  • Frozen Shoulder

PIT is Together with Trigger point injections we can effectively and quickly treat pain from nearly anywhere.

What are Trigger point injections ?

Trigger point injections take the idea of traditional acupuncture & modern IMS techniques to release constricted or tight muscles and take it to another level. Where trigger point therapy, or dry needling can use aggressive stimulation the trigger point injection is more gentle and provides the physical benefit of the injection solution.

Trigger point injections combine a mild dextrose solution with a small amount of Procaine

The end result is that in this clinic we see faster results with these injections then either acupuncture or IMS.

Acupoints: Short for acupuncture points, these include the standard acupuncture points all over the body as well as any additional tender points. These have been gradually discovered and used for thousands of years and often overlap the more recent motor & trigger points.

Motor Points: These refer to the location where nerves enter a muscle, tension in the muscle or fascia can entrap the nerve leading to pain and dysfunction in the area.

Trigger Points: These are simply the painful areas (usually created by nodules or tightness) in muscles and fascia; they're often caused by injury or muscle strain. These are known traditionally in acupuncture as Ashi (ouch) points and have been used for around 1500 years before western medicine rediscovered them.

What does it do?

By injecting right into the trigger points we're accomplishing what other needling therapies like acupuncture and IMS do with a fraction of the treatment and associated discomfort. We want to do more with less. Our goal it to release these muscle contractions so the muscle can relax to its normal resting length so the pain goes away and movement becomes easier.

What does it treat?

Trigger Point injections treat myofascial pain; if there’s an area where the muscles are sore, even if it's causing the pain nearby, it can release them and stop the pain.

Trigger point injections are specifically effective at treating:

  • Deep muscle pain
  • Lumbar pain & sciatica
  • Tight neck, nape & shoulders
  • TMJ Disorder

Together with Perineural treatments we can effectively and quickly treat pain from nearly anywhere.

Perineural Injection Therapy

Lyftogt Perineural Injection Treatment (also known as Subcutaneous Prolotherapy, Neural Prolotherapy, Perineural Subcutaneous Injections and perineural injections) was developed Dr. John Lyftogt, a physician from New Zealand. Based on research from the early 20th century

These are superficial injections into the fascia between the skin & muscles where nerve might be trapped.

Is it safe for diabetics?

Yes, although this is a sugar based solution, it's a very mild concentration. We do have saline available by request but there is a reason why we prefer to use a dextrose based solution.

Neurogenic inflammation often doesn't respond to anti-inflammatory medications or steroid injections, but oddly enough pain can be relieved immediately with sugar. The dextrose based solution we use loosens the tissues to free the nerves and also helps to stop the pain signal. There's a lot of science involved but this treatment blocks the transmission and release of chemical substances which are involved in inflammation and pain.

What is Neural Therapy?

Using very fine needles, we inject a mild procaine solution just under the skin. The dermal branches of nerves connect to deeper neural structures which can relieve pain and regulate different systems in the body

We use neural therapy to treat:

  • Scars & adhesions
  • Concussion
  • Headaches
  • PTSD
  • Prostatitis
  • Rheumatism
  • Shingles

Why use Procaine?

Lidocaine is a significantly stronger and longer lasting analgaesic The half life of Procaine is around 7-8 minutes, so if the pain is still absent after 20-30 minutes we know that tr. Lidociane can last several hours which makes it impossible to know if pain relief is due to a therapeutic effect on the nerve or if the nerve is just numbed.

LIdocaine carries a small risk of methemoglobinemia a blood disorder which can cause headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, cyanosis, even seizures and arrhythmia. Lidocaine is also a potential carcinogen with 67% of lidocaine breaking down into anilines (coal tar derivatives) which has been debateably linked to cancer.

What does it do?

The largest part of the effect of neural therapy is as a nerve block - injecting procaine near superficial branches of nerves, we can treat deeper branches of these nerves. There's a lot of neuroanatomy and physiology focusing on resting membrane potential that I won't fully explain here, but to summarise: a damaged or irritated nerve is more sensitive to stimuli. Even a light touch, even the feeling of clothes on the skin can cause the nerve to send a pain signal. Repeated treatment with a local anaesthetic (such as procaine) can restore the nerve to a state where it's less liable to send unnecessary pain signals.

It's a very effective treatment but while relief can be quick, lasting results take several treatments to resolve chronic pain and illness. Similar to acupuncture treatment, we're trying to reset the body to a new, healthier normal - just with faster and stronger results.

What is Prolotherapy?

When we get injured, our body starts a series of reactions to increase circulation, attract healing factors and activate the immune system to heal the damage. Just imagine being able to get this healing reaction and tissue regrowth from your body without having an injury first.
This is prolotherapy.

What does it do?

Prolotherapy starts an inflammatotory reaction by irritating the tissues

But isn't inflammation bad?

Yes and no. While we generally want less inflammation throughout our body, it's an essential part of our healing process and we couldn't even fix a papercut without it.

Research suggests that after an injury to our joints, ligaments & tendons we heal to about 85% of the original health of the tissue. This means that the joint is weaker and has an increased risk of future injury and premature degeneration. Icing after injury and the use of anti-inflammatory medications means that most people inhibit the inflammatory process, trading a short term decrease in pain for long term impact on their health.

What does it treat?

Prolotherapy is useful for nearly any condition of pain coming from a structural cause:

  • Osteoarthritis in any joint
  • Ligament & tendon injury
  • Tendonitis & tendonosis
  • Migraine & headache (due to neck damage)
  • Rotator cuff tear
  • Chronic & stubborn back pain
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Herniated discs
  • SI joint instability
  • Post-partum pubic bone pain
  • Meniscus tears
  • Ankle injury
  • Ehlers-Danlos syndrome

According to several doctors, prolotherapy is comparable to the safety of acupuncture and is increasingly used as a safer and more effective alternative to corticosteroids.

What is Prolozone?

Prolozone is an injection of medical ozone gas.

What does it do?

Ozone stimulates and activates chondrocytes and fibroblasts, cells responsible for the generation of cartilage, ligaments, tendons and other connective tissue

What does it treat?

Prolozone is useful for nearly any condition of pain coming from a structural cause:

  • Rheumatoid or Psoriatic arthritis in any joint
  • Osteoarthritis in any joint
  • Ligament & tendon injury
  • Tendonitis & tendonosis
  • Migraine & headache (due to neck damage)
  • Rotator cuff tear
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Chronic & stubborn back pain
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Herniated discs
  • SI joint instability
  • Meniscus tears
  • Ankle injury
  • Tarsal tunnel pain
  • Mortons neuroma
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Ehlers-Danlos syndrome

Comprehensive Injection Therapy

Restorative & Regenerative Injections

The core philosophy of comprehensive injection therapy is to provide a treatment with maximum effect; regenerative injections to repair damaged tissue and restorative injections to release tight muscles and trapped nerves. The goal is to restore healthy function and movement and we do that by treating paim and injury at every level.

By combining multiple therapies we can treat joint pain, muscle pain, nerve pain all in the same treatment, for one low price.
